Small Intestine

Small intestine: It is about 6 metre in length and 2.5 cm in thickness. There are three divisions of the small intestine: ‘duodenum’, ‘jejunum’ and ‘ileum’. Duodenum is the first part. It begins from the pyloric stomach and is C shaped. In the middle of the duodenum two different ducts open through a common aperture. One of the ducts is the common bile duct and the other is pancreatic duct. ‘Bile’ is a yellowish green alkaline juice is poured into the duodenum through the common bile duct.

Layers of small intestine: The small intestine is formed of four layers. The inner layer of intestine contains a large number of small finger like projections named as villi which helps in absorption.From inside to outside layers are mucosa, submucosa,muscularis and serosa.

                                                   

Functions:

  • Digestion and Absorption of food material takes place in small intestine.
  • Different kind of secretions reaching the small intestine helps in digestion of different types of nutrients.These secretions are from liver(bile juice), intestinal juice etc.
  • It contains a large number of projections called villi , helps in increasing surface area and results in more absorption of digested food.
